It's clear that Nintendo's using a beefy cartridge for all of the music and sounds in Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! kicks all sorts of butt as an addictive Nintendo DS experience, and while it starts out rudimentary and slow-paced in the early levels, it's one hell of a challenge in the later songs due to the off-rhythm beats and wild beat paths that you'll need to follow as quickly as possible. It's not quite standard bitrate MP3 quality, but it's damn close. There's all sorts of different styles of music tunes within this game, and the audio quality is compressed decently. Because Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! is entirely music-based, it's a very good thing that the music is actually wonderfully composed and performed. Most of the imagery is done by basic animated manga-style panels, with the lower screen providing 3D motion-captured movements of the trio striking poses. But since all your attention should be on following the rhythm and pattern of the song, you'll most likely not even see what's going on with the people you're trying to motivate, at least beyond the three instrumental breaks within each song. All of the gameplay is handled on the lower touch screen, but the story unfolds on the upper display. Occasionally the game will kick over to a "turntable" where you'll have to do the "spin" motion as fast as possible to continue the song the faster you do it, the more likely you'll hit a bonus for spinning it beyond the limit. Miss too much, and the song stops abruptly and the game ends. Miss completely and you're not only penalized with a lack of score, but you also bring the progression bar closer to the zero point. Naturally, the closer to the beat you are, the more heartily you're rewarded with points. Earlier levels feature straight paths, but when you get into the thick of the challenges, you'll have to follow crazy curves and squiggles as they're painted on the touch screen. These elongated beats require players to tap and drag their stylus to the beat, following a virtual volleyball from one end of the beat to the other, and many times back again. Added to the challenge are beats with pathways - tapping isn't enough. The game offers a bit of assistance by providing a collapsing ring around each circle as they appear, and when the collapsing ring matches the circumference of the beat circle, that's the exact moment that it needs to be tapped. During the song, a series of numbered circles pop up on-screen, and it's the player's task to tap the circle to the rhythm of the song. However, this isn't your ordinary rhythm game this one uses the touch screen of the Nintendo DS, offering up a unique style of gameplay that couldn't have been pulled off on any other system. Like most rhythm games, Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! is a follow-the-pattern challenge that matches the beat of the song that's being played. There are 15 different situations, each with their own songs attached for the trio to "dance" to. A violinist gets struck by an intestinal virus and needs some assistance before he finds himself running for the toilet. Another needs to kick some ass in dodge ball. By screaming "Ouendan!", these guys come a-running to motivate the seeker with manly poses, but it's up to the player to control just how well these guys can motivate the person in need. The game follows a trio of motivational "soldiers" that show up when there's trouble afoot in the town. Parappa the Rapper had it, Gitaroo-Man had it, Bust-a-Groove had it. Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! follows the tradition of interlacing an absolutely bizarre setting within the unique music-based gameplay. Lewis ties each point back to its dining-room application. And finally, they get to the milk, tasting a series of glasses that illustrate “body” in a beverage, with the scale of skim milk to heavy cream representing light- to full-bodied. They then conduct a similar experiment with tannins using tea, tasting it every few minutes as the brew grows stronger. They empty their glasses into spit cups to make room for what’s next: tasting a range of sugar solutions to gauge that element’s impact, from a rounder textural note to significant sweetness. “One more time, feel the pain,” Lewis urges before the last increment. Facial expressions change as the solution goes from pleasantly tart to pucker-inducing. Together they add lemon juice to the water drop by drop, tasting after each addition. “What we’re gonna do is deliberately put this into a sweet spot, and then we’re gonna really screw it up and go out of balance, and then we’re gonna bring it back into balance with sugar,” Lewis says. Lewis first instructs everyone to pour a glass of water and taste it as they would a wine (swirl, sniff, swish and all) to establish a “neutral” baseline. “This will be interesting,” he says with a glance toward the milk bucket.Īfter calibrating their palates with an Austrian Grüner Veltliner, the group begins lesson No. Lewis calls the buzzing room to order and explains today’s goal: to gain a deeper understanding of wine’s basic components (acid, body, sugar, tannins) and therefore better describe and contextualize wines for guests. Wine training is routine at many restaurants, but it becomes clear that this session will be anything but ordinary as Kāwi beverage manager Isabella Fitzgerald strolls in with an ice bucket of quarter-gallon milks. Lewis (at left) stands in on Kāwi’s pre-shift meeting, which involves tastings and going over menu changes. The training is voluntary, so, as Lewis puts it, “this is just them wanting to do better.” Everyone takes a seat around a table set with wine glasses, cups and blind-tasting grids for reference. Lewis hops off the subway and enters through the development’s grand lobby (“There’s more marble here than what’s left in Italy,” he comments) to the fifth-floor restaurant.Īt the far end of the warm-toned space, a 10-person mix of front-of-house staff files into the private-dining area, a dark, cozy room with a karaoke machine. It’s time to get to work, training staff at Momofuku’s newest Korean concept, Kāwi, at Hudson Yards. After all, as Lewis says, “I have the dream job.” 9:45 a.m. But he’s used to the pressure, and he keeps it all in perspective. The intensity is understandable-it’s Lewis’ third attempt at the notoriously difficult exam, and on top of that, he’s overseeing beverage programs for the group, which has 13 diverse concepts across the U.S., Australia and Canada, including six Wine Spectator Restaurant Award winners, and three openings on the horizon. It’s been just six hours since he returned from a visit to the group’s Washington, D.C., restraurant, CCDC, but Lewis is the zone. “I’m a crazy person that likes to have constant change and challenges, so a routine day is very boring for me,” he says. Lewis is preparing to take the Master Sommelier exam on July 22, and mornings in the office are rare opportunities for complete focus in his chaotic schedule. But the vibe is quite subdued in the group’s New York City headquarters this morning, illuminated only by the soft glow of sunlight and silent except for the keyboard clicks of the first employee to arrive: corporate beverage director Jake Lewis. Chang’s menus famously include unconventional and exuberant dishes, from shrimp toast to spicy beef ramen to quadruple-fried chicken served cold. Instead of being executed, the lieutenant was given a bottle of wine, probably as a form of reparation for his initial treatment. One of the Frenchmen recognized that insignia, so he was spared. But the lieutenant, remembering he still had the small pouch around his neck, pulled out the coin to show the soldiers his unit’s insignia. They initially planned to execute him, since they couldn’t ID him. Wary of anyone not in uniform, the French soldiers didn’t recognize his accent and immediately assumed he was an enemy. Despite his lack of ID, he managed to find some civilian clothing and escaped anyway, eventually stumbling into a French outpost. The lieutenant was taken to a small town near the front lines of the war. What they didn’t take was the small pouch with the medallion. He survived but was captured by a German patrol, who took all of his identifiable items so he would have no way to identify himself if he escaped. A short time later, his plane was shot down over Germany. The lieutenant put his own medallion in a small leather pouch that he wore around his neck. One of those men was a wealthy lieutenant who wanted to give each member of his unit a memento, so he ordered several coin-sized bronze medallions to be made. started building up its Army Air Service, many men volunteered to serve. The most well-known story that the internet produced linked the challenge coin tradition back to World War I. VIRIN: 150324-F-FK724-204 The Most Common Assumption The second consequence of the quantum nature of the studied process is the interference between these mechanisms. In proton–proton collisions, elastic scattering can occur via two mechanisms: strong nuclear interaction and Coulomb interaction, i.e. Precise modeling of these processes is possible thanks to precise measurements of quantities such as the total cross-section. Strong interactions are relevant, for example, in the search for new physics in experiments at the LHC, where they act as background, as well as in cosmic ray research, where they are responsible for the development of cosmic air showers. Having an accurate knowledge of the total cross-section is of interest not only for studying strong interactions themselves but also in other areas of particle physics. This increase can be thought of as the proton size increasing with energy. The obtained result confirms an important property of strong interactions-the increase of the total cross-section with increasing collision energy. The high precision was possible, among other factors, by the precise determination of the detector position, for which the IFJ PAN group was responsible. The result published by the ATLAS Collaboration is the most precise measurement of this parameter at 13 TeV energy. The total cross-section describes the chance of any type of proton–proton collision and is related to the proton size. The cross-section is a quantity used in particle physics to describe the likelihood of a particular reaction. The optical theorem allowed determining the value of a parameter called the total cross-section from measurements of only elastic interactions. Since the protons in the studied collisions have very high energy, inelastic processes occur frequently. ones where additional particles are produced). It relates elastic interactions to inelastic ones (i.e. The first of these properties is the so-called optical theorem, which is a consequence of probability conservation in quantum processes. The procedure of extracting this information is based on quantum properties of elastic scattering-effects which are not observed in the game of billiards. Conclusions regarding the fundamental properties of nuclear strong interactions between protons at very high energies, were drawn from the shape of this distribution. The direct result of the measurement, published in European Physical Journal C, is the distribution of the scattering angle, or more precisely-the distribution of the variable t, which is proportional to the square of that angle. The special magnet configuration minimizes this divergence and ensures precise measurements. However, tightly focused beams have a large angular divergence, making the measurement of elastic scattering practically impossible. In typical measurements, the goal is to maximize beam focusing in order to increase the frequency of interesting interactions. The second important component of the experimental setup was the special configuration of magnetic fields shaping the LHC accelerator beam. An important contribution of the Krakow group was the work on the trigger and data acquisition system, without which no data can be recorded. This was made possible by the technique of so-called Roman pots, which allows placing of detectors inside the accelerator beam pipe and their close approach to the beam during data taking. Its key element was a set of detectors placed over 200 meters from the collision point, but capable of measuring scattered protons at distances of just a few millimeters from the accelerator beam. Physicists from the Institute of Nuclear Physics Polish Academy of Sciences, as part of the ATLAS Collaboration, performed a measurement of elastic scattering in proton–proton collisions at the LHC accelerator at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV.ĭue to the extremely small scattering angles in such interactions (less than a thousandth of a degree), the measurements required the use of a dedicated measurement system. By measuring the scattering angles, we gain information about the spatial structure of the colliding particles and the properties of their interactions. Here, we also have a relationship between the collision parameter and the scattering angle. In particle physics, we also deal with elastic collisions, when two particles collide, maintaining their identities, and scatter a certain angle to their original direction of motion. As the impact parameter increases, the scattering angle decreases. In the case of a small impact parameter, which corresponds to a highly central collision, the scattering angles are large. The scattering angle depends on how central the collision was (this is often quantified by the impact parameter value-the distance between the centers of the balls in a plane perpendicular to the motion). In a good approximation, these collisions are elastic, where both momentum and energy are conserved. The physics of billiard ball collisions is taught from early school years. |
